CRISS doctoral student wins the 2021 Heritage Curator Competition

Laëtitia Deudon, a doctoral student in History, Civilization, Archaeology and Art History of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds at the Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire en Sciences de la Société (CRISS), is a laureate in the 2021 Curator of Heritage Competition, Archaeology/State specialty,

ranked 2nd nationally in the state civil service (senior scientific civil service corps (A+).

What is the Curator of Heritage Competition?

It is a highly selective (10% success rate) recruitment competition for the senior scientific civil service, organized by the Institut national du Patrimoine (INP), a major curatorial school in Paris accessible mainly to those with a Parisian background (Henri IV, Science Po, Ecole du Louvre), but which is becoming more democratic and is also open to the equal opportunity pathway (CPI) and the external competition.

After passing the competitive examination, the winners undergo application training in major national and international heritage institutions, and at the National Institute.

What is the role of the heritage curator?

The curator of archaeology is both a scientist and a heritage professional, an archaeologist and a high-level researcher who conducts and implements the State's cultural policy in archaeology, ensuring the application of the Heritage Code and working closely with the archaeological community (INRAP, collectivity, CNRS) and the cultural institutions.

His missions are to study, inventory, conserve, safeguard and enhance the archaeological heritage by disseminating the results of his research through publications in journals in his field of specialty. He coordinates at the regional level the archaeological researches within the Regional Services of Archaeology (SRA), in the DRAC (Regional Directions of the Cultural Affairs) or within the general direction of the heritage, by putting his administrative, scientific and technical competences at the service of the ministry of the Culture.

A word from the winner

I chose to prepare the curatorial exam in order to put my research skills in history and archaeology at the service of the State and local authorities, in particular to protect the fluvial archaeological heritage (mills, canals) on a national scale, and to promote and make known the rich and diversified heritage of the Hauts-de-France. I did almost all my university studies at the UPHF, at Mont Houy and at the University Center of Cambrai, first in History, then in a professional degree in Cultural Actions and Archaeology, then in a Master's degree in Research and in a doctorate in the form of a thesis under the international supervision of France-Quebec on the development of river landscapes over the long term.

Laëtitia DEUDON

In parallel, Laëtitia is finalizing her thesis "Comparative study of the Scheldt valley from Cambrai to Tournai (XII-Xth centuries) and the St. Lawrence valley in the Montreal area (XVII-Xth centuries)", directed by Ms. Corinne BECK, which she should defend this year.
