MY ACTIVITIES...
Full professor since 2004 (French CNU 61), I am a researcher in control, scheduling and supervision of complex systems. We assume that several decisional and autonomous entities (modeled for example as holons, agents, intelligent products, physical agents, etc.) may cooperate or coordinate themselves to reach a given global goal generally expressed in terms of short and long term performances. We specifically work on the joint integration of heterarchical/distributed organizational approaches of these entities coupled with more classical approaches (centralized, hierarchized). This enables us to enlarge the set of possibilities to tune organization according to its expected properties such as observability, traceability, agility, optimality and reactivity. All the designed ingrated systems can then be considered as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Since we consider the integration of Active / Intelligent Products as a possible mean to reach these properties, we also pay attention to the design of these systems from a product lifecycle management (PLM) perspective.
In Cyber-Physical Systems (and aligned to the principles of the concept of intelligent products), moving decisions closer to the point where they will be applied should shorten reaction delays, make it easier to manage re-initialisation and reconfiguration procedures after shut downs or breakdowns, increase traceability and allow entities to be more active throughout their entire life cycle, allow the control system to evolve more easily according to unexpected changes in the external or internal environment and facilitate collaboration mechanisms, as well as collaboration in virtual and networked systems (enterprises or companies) and ICT systems (MES, ERP...).
However, despite these expected advantages, the kind of control systems we are working on have several drawbacks, which limits their application in real cases and generates challenging scientific issues, mainly: guaranteed near-optimal or satisfactory performances, design methodology & safety, interoperability and deployment norms, development/scalability/costs and the final challenge: manager trust and investment returns, for more information, see (Trentesaux, 2009). We are curently working on these issues, some of them being sufficiently managed to enable first viable and sustainable industrial transferts.
In our research, ethics and sustainability are becoming major challenges. For example, we consider energy and relevant stakes (eg., variable and unpredictable peak power from renewable energy production systems) and we foster researchers to consider other aspects of sustainability seldom addressed in scientific studies such as human-centered design of control systems and machine ethics. "Lean manufacturing" can be seen as an application domain of our research. For more information, see (Giret et al., 2015).
Our approach is global and experimental: from theoretical developments to real cases experimentations via simulation/optimization studies, including the use of modern metaheuristics. Here are some key words to sum up our activity:

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE IN MANUFACTURING CONTROL
Our theoretical developments are aligned with the so-called "Industry 4.0" or "Factory of the Future" initiatives. In the manufacturing control area, we have the unique opportunity to experiment and validate all our concepts on the real flexible manufacturing system of the AIP-PRIMECA center of the University. For example, using a model of this FMS, NetLogo simulations of heterarchical control systems based on stigmergy (product routing issue) or potential fields (product routing and allocation issues) have been developped. Two videos (with full descriptions of associated scenarii) showing real experimentations using the Contract-Net (for dynamic task allocations and insertions) and a dynamic, distributed & embedded version of the well-known Dijkstra's shortest-path algorithm (for the dynamic routing of intelligent products) are available.
Visit the website of our benchmark initiative, named Bench4star, led in collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of Brangança (IPB, Portugal) and based upon the AIP cell of the university of Valenciennes. This benchmark has been designed to be usable both by the OR and the production control communities.
Visit also the French IMS² website of the MACS research group of the CNRS, the IFAC TC 5.1 website, the IEEE-IES TC on Industrial Agents, the IEEE-SMC TC on Distributed Intelligent Systems, the IEEE-SMC TC on industrial intelligent systems, the IMS initiative and the STC O website of the CIRP. All these organizations have leading activities in "Intelligent Manufacturing Systems", which is one of our core activity.
The French ANR national research agency granted project HUMANISM (standing for HUman-MAchines CooperatioN for flexIble production SysteMs) is relevant to this application field. Led by the LAMIH, It addresses specifically the issue of cooperation between humans and self-organising /CPS-based flexible production systems as promoted by Industry 4.0 principles.
More recently, the French ANR national research agency granted project ETHICS40 (management of ethical risks for the industry of the future) extends the work led in HUMANISM and focuses more precisely on the way ethical risks may be identified and managed when facing the rapid evolution of digital capabilities in future industrial systems.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE IN COMPLEX SYSTEM EMBEDDED INTELLIGENT MONITORING AND SUPERVISION
Our conceptual developments are also applied to the embedded diagnosis and intelligent supervision of complex systems in their use phase. The Surfer project, led by Bombardier Transport, aims to embed as much intelligence as possible in train (and as close as possible to the sub-system to be controlled) to limit raw monitoring data emission to central databases by emitting only high-level and accurate information. More, local decision and monitoring enables to finetune and to supervise critical systems such as doors or HVAC.

- Deputy director of the LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201.Damien Trentesaux (male) is full professor at the LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 research lab of the Université Polytechique Hauts-de-France (France). His areas of interest concern the control and the optimization of discrete event systems (manufacturing, transport, logistics, and services) and their interaction with the human in the context of Industry 4.0. Prof. Trentesaux was involved in the H2020 CSA SCORE Project on the assessment of European Manufacturing Industries in Transportation. He is head of the SurferLab, a joint research lab funded by Bombardier Transport, Prosyst and UPHF dedicated to the application of AI in transportation. He also works with IRT Railenium and SNCF on the autonomous train and is currently involved in the project “droit des robots et autres avatars de l’humain” funded by the IDEX Université de Strasbourg. Prof. Trentesaux has supervised 15 PhD thesis and is author and co-author of more than 180 peer reviewed publications in journals, books, and chapters of books and conference proceedings. He is a member of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Technical Committee on Industrial Agents and the IFAC Technical Committee 5.1 on Manufacturing Plant Control.
